Microsoft Windows 8 has no Start Menu

That's actually wrong IMO.

The Start screen (Metro/Windows UI) IS the Start menu.
Embrace it...it's a wonderful thing.

I've moved across to Win 8 and am really happy with it in its natural form.
I have no intentions of installing customisations to recreate the 'Start menu'.

One of the biggest mistakes I made from Win 95/98 up until half way through my XP life is clinging to the old Start Menu.
Once I actually used the newer start menus for each Win OS going forward - I realised that MS had input a lot of time and money to IMPROVE the "Start" menu with each iteration.
The "Start" screen is the next evolution of this and is really cool and nifty. So much more customisable than the old Start menus.
You can even put 'Administrative Tools' on the Start Screen (see my guide here: http://snafder.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/display-administrative-tools-in-windows.html )

The Start screen appears so quickly and disappears just as quickly with a press of the Start key on my keyboard.
Funny how it behaves like THE START MENU. Sheeesh people - get over it and move on.
Change is as good as a holiday and man I'm really enjoying the new OS.

Display Administrative Tools in the Windows 8 Start Screen

To show the "Administrative Tools" in the new Windows 8 (Win 8) Metro/Windows UI screen - do the following:

  1. Firstly bring open the Start screen - this option is not available if you don't.
  2. Once the Start screen is up, show the 'charms' bar (on my PC I move the mouse cursor to the top right corner of the screen to show it - a friend with a touch screen PC simply drags his finger from the right of the screen across towards the left from memory).
  3. Click/press on the settings 'charm' (the cog with 'settings' written under it)
  4. Select/press "Tiles" from the list that appears.
  5. Change the slider that reads "Show administrative tools" across to "Yes"
  6. Click back onto the Start screen (anywhere but on the options area you just modified) and the options  charm screen will vanish and the Administrative Tools will magically appear on your Start screen.
  7. Cool beans

Facebook (aka Stalkbook) "Max number of upload retries exceeded: Error #2032"

When trying to upload some measly image to Stalkbook - it failed with some gripe about "Max number of upload retries exceeded: Error #2032"

After forgetting all of my IT knowledge on PC problems, I searched Google and such high and low.
All the results were on spammy half baked "sign up" sites and others with little or no useful info.

Then I had a moment of sudden realisation and clarity... I hear the voice of Roy (IT Crowd) in my head "Have you tried turning it off and on again?"... to which I answered.. "Now that I come to think of it!"

SOLVED: I restarted my PC and then it stopped being a bitch and worked

Magic shit the old Service Desk 101 turning it off and on again trick.. annoying if you have a million things open all the time like I do but it works so meh.

Just for your info - the Facebook potentially useful tips on resolving your image related Stalkbook issues is located here...

Of note - it states that "We recommend the photo does not exceed 15MB" - so unless you're uploading mammoth pictures from your super deluxe DSLR... it shouldn't be an issue for actual size but worth noting.

HTH.

Windows Live Messenger (Essentials) keeps getting logged out under Windows 8 - particularly after PC has been locked

Installed Windows 8 Enterprise on my work laptop - proceeded to install Windows Live Essentials (including Live Messenger).

Everything seemed to be going along just fine, but for some reason Windows Live Messenger would randomly log me out.
This would happen while I was in the middle of using it....strange!
When I locked the PC for long enough that the screen went black - it would do it every time.

I confirmed that it wasn't power settings - nothing was switching off apart from the monitor.
But I knew the issue wasn't power related as it would happen while I was using the PC and in the middle of messaging.
The times it did it were varied - sometimes it was every 30 seconds, other times it would last a few minutes.
I checked all the usual 'this will fix it' forum post suggestions such as firewall or anti-virus..none of them were to blame.

Anyway - in the end - the solution was to un-install Messaging (Metro/Windows UI tile application).

I did this (from the Desktop) by pressing the Start key to bring up the Metro/Windows UI screen, right clicked on 'Messaging' tile then clicked on 'Un-install' at the bottom of the screen.

It prompted me (from memory) that in order to do that it had to un-install 'Mail' and 'People'.

I thought - woah - what's this about.
Before going ahead - I tried the Messaging client.
I quite liked it over Live Messenger - but it is clearly aimed at tablet use and I couldn't have it up and running on one monitor while working on the other. I was able to move it to another monitor - but then it shifted my Metro/Windows UI main screen. Bottom line - unless I have a Surface or tablet of some sort - I'm not going to use it...I prefer Live Messenger if I have to use the MS messaging service (I prefer GTalk but have to use Live Messenger for comms with other work folk).
Anyway - as I use Outlook and the Live Messenger client, I didn't need 'Mail','People', or 'Messaging' - as such I went back and proceeded with the un-install.

Since removing 'Messaging' - Windows Live Messenger has not signed me out randomly - and doesn't sign me out after locking the PC anymore.... SOLVED!

PS. This post will likely only be valid for a short while as Microsoft (thankfully) are decommissioning the Live Messenger service.

Anyway - hope this helps someone else.
